About the team

WELCOME TO THE UNDER 6s
Our under 6s group is for girls and boys who are four and five years old (Reception and Year One).

No previous rugby experience is required and all are welcome. We introduce children to rugby through the tag format of the game and all the sessions are friendly home training sessions.

The main aim of every U6s training session is for the children to have FUN while learning fundamental physical skills relevant to all sports, as well as rugby specific skills that will prepare them for their future rugby careers at Pocklington.

Throughout the training we will reinforce the key rugby union core values of TEAMWORK, RESPECT, ENJOYMENT, DISCIPLINE and SPORTSMANSHIP.

TRAINING TIME AND VENUE
2024-2025 season starts on Sunday the 1st of September.

Every Sunday during the rugby season (September to June) from 10.30 until 12.00 at The Main Club on Percy Road or Kilnwick Park on Kilnwick Road, Pocklington (YO42 2LL). Please arrive at 10.25 so your child is ready to begin at half past.

At Kilnwick Park we are usually the furthest team on the left as you look at the pitches, but ask any of the coaches and they will point you in the right direction and look for our flag.

COST
We offer all new players three free taster sessions to try it out before making the decision to become a member and pay for the remainder of the sessions. Once you decide to join there is a £100 fee for the season (this is reduced for more than one child).

GET IN TOUCH
Feel free to just turn up on the day to try it out. If you have any questions please contact U6s Head Coach, Rory Innes ( see club contacts)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What should my child wear?

Anything they are comfortable running around in and that you don't mind getting muddy. As it gets cold, it is best for them to have a few layers to keep warm and they can remove a layer or two as they get warm running around. Footwear with good grip is important, so having some rugby or football boots would be ideal (although not vital for the first few sessions as they test it out).

Do they need any specialist equipment?

No. Under 6s is completely non-contact so there is no need for any equipment like a gum shield and all equipment for the sessions is provided by the rugby club. As above, footwear with good grip is ideal. Please also bring a drink for your child, as they will have regular breaks and might get thirsty.

Will there be any physical contact?

No. Under 6 tag rugby is completely non-contact - there is no physical tackling. With tag rugby the children wear a belt with velcro tags. When one of these tags is removed this is called a 'tag' and the children pass the ball to another player. Physical aspects - like tackling - are not introduced until Under 9s.

Do I need to stay for the session?

Yes, we ask that each child has an adult on the touchline for the duration of the session.

Can I get involved and help with the session?

Yes! Ideally in each age group a parent or guardian will act as a Team Manager. This involves taking the registration at each session, getting the details of new joiners who turn up on the day and generally supporting with team administration. There is also space for a limited number of parents/carers to act as assistant coaches and get involved in the sessions. Please direct all questions on these roles to the Coach.

Do the children play games against other clubs?

No. Games of tag rugby against other rugby clubs generally start in the Under 7s age group. All the U6 sessions are friendly training sessions, although there may be times when we join forces with another local rugby club to run joint training sessions.
