About the team

WELCOME TO THE UNDER 8s
Our under 8s group is for girls and boys who are in Year 3 at school.
No previous rugby experience is required, and all are welcome.
We introduce children to rugby through a mix of training sessions in Pocklington as well as home and away matches in our area.
The main aim of every U8s training session is for the children to have FUN while learning fundamental physical skills relevant to rugby and beyond that will prepare them for their future rugby careers at Pocklington.
Throughout the training we will reinforce the key rugby union core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

TIME AND VENUE
Every training Sunday during the rugby season from 10.30 until 11.45 at either Kilnwick Park on Kilnwick Road, Pocklington (YO42 2LL) or at Pocklington Rugby Club on Percy Road in the centre of Pocklington. Please arrive at 10.25 so your child is ready to begin at half past.
Home matches are also played at these two venues. Away matches take place across the extended local area.
Look out for our U8s flag.

COST
We offer all new players three free taster sessions to try it out before making the decision to become a member and pay for the remainder of the sessions. Once you decide to join there is a £100 fee for the whole season (this reduced for families with more than 1 child).

GET IN TOUCH
You are more than welcome to try it out but it’s best to ring ahead in case we are playing an away match. If you have any questions, please contact the team manager on the roles tab at the top.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What should my child wear?
For training, anything they are comfortable running around in and that you don't mind getting muddy. As it gets cold, it is best for them to have a few layers to keep warm and they can remove a layer or two as they get warm running around.
Rugby or football boots are needed.
We wear the team kit for matches. We provide team shirts for matches. Shorts and socks are available to purchase from the club shop. Some children choose to wear kit for training too.
When it is wet/raining, it’s a good idea to wear a lightweight waterproof under kit shirts.
Clothing with a hood is not allowed on the training or playing field.
Glasses are also not allowed at training or matches. Children either take glasses off or wear safety goggles or contact lenses.
Please contact the Team Manager for any other kit questions.

Do they need any specialist equipment?
No. Under 8s is completely non-contact so there is no need for any equipment like a gum shield and all equipment for the sessions is provided by the rugby club. As above, footwear with good grip is ideal. Please also bring a drink for your child, as they will have regular breaks and might get thirsty.
Will there be any physical contact?
No. Under 8 tag rugby is non-contact - there is no physical tackling. With tag rugby the children wear a belt with velcro tags. When one of these tags is removed this is called a 'tag' and the children pass the ball to another player. Physical aspects - like tackling - are not introduced until Under 9s.

Do I need to stay for the session?
Yes, we ask that each child has an adult on the touchline for the duration of the session including training and matches.

Can I get involved and help with the session?
Yes! In each age group, parents and guardians are involved in the team management, coaching and organisations of the team from a treasurer to first aiders. We welcome people to get involved and be part of the U8s team.

Do the children play games against other clubs?
Yes, we have a mix of home and away matches within the East Riding area which the children really love. It is a great chance to meet other clubs and a hot meal us is usually provided after each game – home and away.
